Hello - Does anyone have a recommendation/experience with mounting a bike rack (for 2 bikes). I am looking at hitch mounted and ladder mounted. I suspect that ladder mounted could be more stable if attached to the side rails (but then that ladder has been there for 43 years...hmmm).
Many Thanks for any insight on this.

Do Not use the ladder. My experience was
2 kids bikes ripped ladder off. Like not just screws...

I have a rack that hooks around the spare tire. That works best for me now.

It is fairly easy to make one that hangs off the spare tire mount. This frees up the hitch and ladder.

Our first coach was a 76 Birchaven. It had a bike rack somehow mounted up
front. For the life of me I don’t remember how it attached. It held two
bikes.

I had the inside cap down and could see the pointed ends of the ladder rack screws. They are mounted in the very thin fiberglass of the outside shell. After that I worried about the ladder supporting my weight climbing it. I added sevral layers of fiberglass on the inside where the holes are to make hard points for those screws. I would not hang anything on the ladder without hardening the screw mounting points.

May I suggest referring to my strategy the following Photo Album of the GMC Motorhome Photo Site. It is of course just One of many strategies on mounting a bike carrier.

I hung one on my spare, using bungies to secure the bottom.

Here’s a picture from the deeps of time.

Hitch mount (ball is the through bolt) has served me well. It does make it slightly harder to use the dump with bikes on rack but it is possible.

I had a bike rack on my toad until a fella approached me in a rest area. He had followed me into the rest area and noted that unless he had the right angle on my toad tail lights, he could not see the lights because the bikes blocked the view. Since then I have noted the same on many other RV'rs toads....difficult to see those tail lights. So I went to a ladder style bike rack on the coach. That was 7 or 8 yrs ago. Carrying two bikes and have had no issues to date.

to clarify, my screws held tight in the fiber glass. the articulation going down the road of the ladder bike rack with 2 toddler kids bikes, caused fiberglass fatigue around the ladder mounts and cracked out about a 4" square of fiberglass around each of the ladder mounts just below the window. I have since used epoxy to repair and have bolts now rather then screws to a large fiber plastic backer. so if my ladder pulls loose there, it will be a 1'x6" hole now. but I will not put anything off that ladder while bouncing down the road.

it is amazing the leverage and such that happens while driving around back there. I would not put more then 2 bikes off the spare tire. it is not the weight of the 4 bikes that cause issues, it is the leverage once it gets further out.

I have used a ladder mounted rack and found it was a hassle to mount and dismount the bikes. Especially if you have a girls bike. Also, our ladder mount made it very difficult to access our storage pod with bikes attached.

I now have a hitch mounted rack which provides us with an easier way to mount and dismount the bikes. The only downside with the hitch rack is our GMC garage is only 30.5' deep and with bikes attached, there is little to no room to walk around our GMC with the garage door closed.
