My coach does not have an awning. What other type/manufacturer awnings do you other owners have installed besides Zip Dee awnings? I am impressed with the quality of Zip Dee's products. However, I do not like having the side arms permanently exposed on the coach. One of the great things about our GMC's is their styling. So, I do not care for having the awning arms exposed like the Zip Dee does.

I have seen people take off the arms for traveling. A couple of bolts to reinstall. There is also a “euro style” awning where the arms are horizontal, but I don’t know the brand.

If your willing to spend $2800 -3500 you can have one from Europe.
There are disadvantage as sudden wind will damage them'

As one of the first (almost THE first) adopters of the Omnistor "armless"
awning, I learned early to over-compensate for the wind hazard Jim K.
refers to. At Mountain Home, IA, with my Airstream Land Yacht, I once got
caught with a awning out in 60+ mph winds. As a result, I ALWAYS position
the support legs vertical rather than diagonally back to the clips on the
body. And, regardless of the current wind conditions, I ALWAYS position
screw-augers at 45* horizontally and vertically from the tops of those legs
with 1000#+ test nylon straps. I've never been concerned about any
wind/rain conditions.
It's unfortunate that the Omnistor seems to be no longer available. Thule
seems to have bought it, advertise it as Thule Omnistor, and apparently
stopped production of anything longer than 4.5 M.

Check with zipper.com or telephone them.
They also offer awnings without sidearms.
Expensive though but perhaps not more than other manufacturers.

Pete,
If you have a email or a phone that accepts photos via text, I can send you photos of how a GMC looks with a zipdee awning and the arms taken off. The uninstalled arms will fit in a roof pod while traveling. I don’t know how to post pictures here.

I have looked at the Carefree of Colorado Freedom roof mount model. It is a modern cannister style that deploys with folding lateral arms but also has fold out/down arms that attach to either brackets mounted on the side of the coach or can be used as ground poles. Seems to have the sleek look and with the reinforcing fold-down arms addresses the wind load issue. Is anyone familiar with this model? It is offered in 1/2 meter lengths. I was considering 3.5 or 4 meters. What length do most people have? Thanks.

P.S. I just looked at the Thule Omnistor. It seems great minds think alike Ken! The Freedom model is the same type of design.

Pete,
I'm not having any luck viewing the Carefree awnings, but let me give you
some history: About 10-12 years ago, I found on the 'net the Omnistor
awnings, made in Belgium and really liked what I saw. The sort of teardrop
shaped box looked like it would match the tumblehome of the GMC roof almost
perfectly, using the correct base mount. That base mount looked to be that
for the "Dethleffs Premium" european motor home. I finally found out that
all of Carefree of Colorado's awning hardware was made by Omnistor, so I
called them. I had no luck getting any information or cooperation from
them. Finally, a GMCer in Europe offered to guarantee payment to a Dutch
dealer who would ship awnings to me. I got 5 orders together to put the
project in motion.
Before I placed the order, a GMCer on Vancouver Island, BC tried again with
Carefree and managed to reach some VP who agreed to import the hardware
(with their periodic sea-land container load) we needed from Omnistor,
install Carefree fabric (with a much wider selection available than in
Europe), and ship them direct to individual customers. He would be the
exclusive Distributor for North America.
That worked very well for a year or more. I, of course, got one of the
first deliveries. I've no idea how many R.G.F. sold, nor for how long, nor
why he quit. And it's been several years since I've even heard of him.
I have seen Carefree box awnings similar to ours on some class B's, but
never anything nearly as long as the GMC calls for. And I've never seen
them advertised for direct sale.
At that time, Fiamma, headquartered in Orlando, FL, had similar awings,
made in Italy. I visited their headquarters and wasn't very impressed with
the products or the operation; they may have improved since then -- at
least 10 years ago.

I hated my Fiamma/Dometic - it was a horrible, overly complex device... It killed itself one night after dark (it tore its arms apart when retracting and then the winder started skipping). I priced out repair parts at one point, but it became very expensive, very quickly. It was forcibly removed a short time later...
It may have been due to an early life near the ocean on the Oregon coast. Lots of corrosion on the alloy parts - nothing seemed to run smoothly during the time I owned it.
If I can ever get myself a good, used Zip Dee - that's what I'll do. But I can't justify the HUGE price of a new one (especially if it has to cross the border to get to me). The kicker - I'm almost certain that mine had a Zip Dee at some point in the past (leftover hardware and holes are apparent)...
