Facebook is a "social" site and is far worse for off topic posting than this forum has been. This place is the best automotive forum I have participated in and I would hate to see it fragmented by people leaving. When someone annoys me, I just block their posts. If someone announces their religious or political views, I say thanks for the warning.

When I first participated in this forum, I appreciated it's unique character. I am involved in a lot of forums, mostly aviation related but also Escapees (which is run by a family whose members all think alike, but none who think like me Surprised ). I have been banned several times for just MENTIONING AARP in a post....betcha didn't know aarp is a political subject, did ya...????

Back in those old days, it was the battle of the Titans, Arch and Tom Warner....remember? I thought it was a hoot. Kind of like a campfire dispute.....and you know what....SO WHAT?

I have sat next to folks at "dinners" where it only took me about 2 minutes to discover that the guy I was sitting next to might not think like me....HORRORS..!!! Who would have thought it possible? Did I get up and LEAVE? No, as we had something in common (or we would not have been at the same event). Same with this wonderful forum. Don't like it that someone has a "faith" and expresses that fact? Don't read what he/she has to say if it bothers you that much. In these times, can you imagine how had it is to HAVE a "faith"? Think about it. On the other hand, NOT having a "faith" seems to be a religion of it's own and if that "religion" bothers you, ignore it.

As for thread creep, who cares? Sitting around a campfire and having a discussion about the failure of Johnson Rod Bearings will eventually morph into a discussion about someones alcoholic brother in law or bone fishing in the Florida Keys....and that is what it is all about.

Want to leave because you are so offended by "opinions"....all I can say is "buh by".

Where are Tom and Arch when we need them?

Guys, what is going on?  The is a place to talk about GMC-- not politics, religion or anything like that. Come on, what are we doing!  Sorry, I can't read all of these posts, just too much but lets argue about GMC things, there's plenty of that to go around-- if the other stuff had easy answer they would not be a subject and hey, if you own a TZE number I don;t really care who you are or what you look like.

If I'm off the mark on this please excuse me, I'm not going to spend the time needed to figure it all out.

Man we don;t need another GMC mailing list, we get into enough crap with this one!  Just like I don;t think we need another parts list running around-- we have too many now that are not maintained.  There's so much "Stuff" out there-- it's not the part numbers guys, it's what you do with the parts/ pieces that matters.  So having more lists to gleen through-- ask me or Jim K., if the part can be had locally I think Jim is with me  tell folks how to get that part.  I don;t sell things you can find locally-- see that's why another list won't help.

How did I get on this--- Oh yea, we're all confused enough, just everyone move back from your screen a bit and let the thing cool off.  Stop all this and lets get back to the GMC  stuff.  I can go to the TV for soap operas...

JimB,

I voiced my opinion last night on this when I told those responsible to pull up there big boy pants and get back to GMCs.
.....or maybe we should all get out our quilting needles and gossip like a bunch of old ladies.

I think some people have way too much time on their hands or are lonely.

Bob,

I understand your frustration and it pains me to read some of these exchanges. But I'm not sure that splintering this group - this community - would have a net positive effect. This worries me greatly. This community is what convinced me to take a deep breath and buy a 35 year old coach. That is not a sane action. It is borderline certifiable for someone like me, a total auto mechanic newbie, and something with which I need help. This group is that help.

The way I see it I'm a steward taking care of my GMC to the best of my ability and trying to preserve it for the FOs (future owners). The GMCnet is an extension of that. It is a social group, for sure, but it is also a repository of information and a legacy we are leaving behind for those that come after us. When arguments arise about the usual non-GMC topics, are we being effective stewards and leaving behind a legacy that we'd like FOs to read? Does that behavior strengthen out ties or hurt them?

How many FOs, running across this board for the first time, and running smack dab into a forum that at a time such as this has a modicum of GMC information, a lot of off-topic threads, and a lot of hurt feelings? Does this attract new owners? Does this increase the value of our community and our coaches, or does it hurt it? I think the answer is clear.

I don't engage in religious or political conversations unless it is one on one and the other person wishes to discuss it...and sometimes not even then. I don't mind the occasional foray into..well, anything, but when divisive behavior is continuing, regardless of whether I agree with the opinion or not, it needs to stop.

It seems to me that setting up a separate category on this forum for such off topic conversations and arguments would serve the purpose and keep the community together.

The GMCsandbox starts to cover the territory for the separate coategory, but there are some barriers. The first of which is the description, "A place to post test messages without annoying the GMCnet mailing list." It would have to transition from being a "testing" area to a "watering hole" or whatever. If someone is going to post something they know will create controversy, post it there. If they want to shoot the breeze about anything that's not GMC specific, post it there. If they don't post it there, the thread should be moved there for them. I don't know much about forum technicalities, and whether this forum has that capability, but I know other forums can and do. The second is that the sandbox apparently doesn't get sent out over the mailing list. I'm not sure in which way that should change, or if it should, but it would need to be addressed.

Some people need and like to fight. Let 'em. Just don't make me read the blow-by-blow reports. Inserting divisive and incendiary comments into a thread I'm following _is_ subjecting me to reading the blow-by-blows. I don't appreciate it and don't see the need or benefit to anyone.

I've taken no sides, and don't intend to. I just wanted to give a relative newbie's take on the current brouhaha and offer a possible solution. Of course a structural change would only go so far. To really effect a change, and to restore the respect and civility we all deserve will take...a community.

Richard

I don't think anyone originally brought up a specific political or religious subject, it was the intolerance of mentioning a religious or political comment to a post concerning the health of a long-time poster. And as I recall the issue that person faced was far more serious than whether someone was offended by a religious reference or not.
