around at least several days to see if the white shows any stains that might
indicate a micro-level leak. Then he does a final coat at brand color.

Matt-
I was too busy juggling slides, watching the time and trying to record
questions to listen carefully but I thought he was rather casual in his
answer to paint color. Didn't he say he found some primer that was in
the shop and used that, then found some gray which was good for one
brand, and used black for some others. He did mention that on inventory
jobs, he would let then age a few days to look for discolorations
(yellow) but that on quick turnaround jobs that wasn't possible. Phil,
he was pretty hip for an Amish guy.

Not Dan but I would say it is a reasonable task for average GMCer to take on. I wish we could of had taken a video of what Leon did because he had the old cooling unit out in 5-10 minutes. It really isn't that hard at all and then he gave the little tips/hints on what to watch out for when you put the new unit back in. The hardest part will be taking the refigerator in and out of GMC. In fact Leon said there are times he does it right inside the motorhome with unit laying on floor. Ususally due to the fact some units will not fit out of door, not usually our problem with GMC.

Yes it is a problem. That is how I broke my foot. I was taking it out of the GMC. The old Norcold was going to Shipshe to be repaired. It never made it there and I ended up in a cast with crutches for a couple months.
I ended up buying a new Dometic and my daughter installed it so I could make the next GMCEastern States rally.

I have replaced cooling units in a couple of refrigerators, including the popular Dometic 2652. It is not a difficult task. It is worth doing if the frig is in good shape.
There is a solid material suspended in the liquid refrigerant that is circulated throughout the cooling unit. This solid can collect in some spots of the cooling unit and prevent flow to some or all sections. That is why sometimes the freezer works well but the frig does not. I do not know the method for cleaning out all of this old material when a cooling unit is rebuilt, but it is a very important part of the process. I would choose a rebuilder that has been doing it for a while and has a low failure rate. Google gas refrigerator cooling units and you will find many.
Leon's (fixyourfridge.com) price of $400.00 plus shipping for a two door model is a fair price.
I just spent a few minutes on the phone with Leon and asked him about his procedures. Some of it is proprietary but after talking a while, I believe he is doing an excellent job at rebuilding the cooling units. His web site describes their rebuilding process.
He made an effort for the GMC community and therefore we should consider his service.

We are really happy with Leon.
Our Dometic quit working dependably on propane in Florida. When we first began to have problems with it we searched the Internet for all the new units available. None were going to be a close enough replacement dimensional fit. It looked like it was going to be a lot of work and a real pain.
We had heard of Leon through Eastern States, so on a trip back from Wisconsin where we would be going through Indiana we called Leon
We stopped in his driveway late that night. Leon let us sleep until we woke up. Our 3 way Dometic had quit working on propane, but was still working just fine on 120 volt.
Leon quickly diagnosed our Dometic 3 way, that we have been very happy with. He found a problem in the circuit board, had one in stock, and got the fridge up and going on gas in short order.
Leon also had a collection of parts fridges and we put together a couple of new looking crispers. Ours crispers had both cracked over the many years of use and kids hands.
Leon also replaced the ugly, ugly yellow original paneling on the fridge door with wood paneling. It looked so good and changed the appearance of the entire kitchen area to my eye.
We were very, very happy.
Then a year or so later we had a problem on the road and called Leon. He walked me through a diagnosis over the phone and I quickly had the problem resolved.
The fridge has been trouble free since. We really like our Dometic and we really like Leon.
When time comes for replacement or rebuild, Leon will get the fridge for rebuild.
