Yes, I'd definitely recommend a fiberglass shroud. It will route all of
the air passing through the radiator to the fan, which I consider an
advantage. If it's split horizontally, removing just a few bolts will
allow you to remove just the bottom half for access to the fan belts and
water pump when they inevitably need attention.

Someone, sometime, posted some pictures of modifying the original "horse collar" type fan shroud into a split shroud. I THOUGHT it was KenH. But just looked and did not see it in his MANY albums. But depending on how much you value your "life minutes" it might be a good idea just to buy one that is ready to bolt in.
The main thing is to ensure the area around the fan is where the shroud is the tightest. The more space around the tips of the fan the less efficient the fan will be. The "venturi ringed" horse collar might have been overkill and could be why the later coaches did not have them.

Just wondering how the fan blade clearance on the fiberglass shroud compares to the original horse collar unit?
Any chance of the fan rubbing if an engine mount was bad?

Just like on many "modern" vehicles -- to eliminate the stagnation of air
ahead of the disengaged fan -- if there is any. Which the
not-yet-accomplished testing was to determine. One of these days I'll
position a video camera to see whether the flaps open.

Les,
When I first installed the Cad 500, the fan would touch the shroud during
hard acceleration. I had to reposition the shroud slightly to provide
slightly more space on one side. I don't remember how much clearance that
was. I can check when I re-install the engine. I never had that problem
with the 455, which used the SAME motor mount.

I did exactly that several years ago. I used 1" or 1.25" foam rubber and glued it inside.
