Yes this stolen thread has taken a life of its own!

Here in Canada, the 20lb bbq style tanks must be re certified every 10 years, which basically means tossed out. I think this goes for other small portable sizes too.

When I bought my coach, there didn't seem to be a concern about the original tank. My insurance company required the "propane system" to be inspected which cost me $40.00.

I kinda worry myself if the tank could be rusting from the inside out and my blow a leak some day.

I have never had any issues with getting it filled, except that it would sometimes leak after filling. A tap with a screwdriver handle fixes that. Currently I have a second fill valve screwed on the first one waiting for the propane to be used up... in 3 years I haven't used 1/2 tank.

I'd rather stick with the fill-by-litre tank as a 20lb costs about $20.00 here to fill no matter how full or empty it is, while pumped its 74 cents/litre.

Tanks designed for vertical use can't be turned on their side without modification. If not modified liquid propane is sent to regulator which is a no no according to the local propane distributer. They install a snorkel in the outlet of the tank that gathers the propane above the liquid when the tank is on its side. When reinstalled after filling the take must be oriented with the snorkel up.

Ed, where is 'here'?
I have one in an old Itasca, and a set of appliances.  No idea the integrity
of them, but if you're close, come get them.  Tank will likely need new
seals or a new valve.  I just resealed tihe one in the driver coach, not a
problem.

Something I didn't know until a year ago. The valve must be turned all the
way for either off or on. For a few years I would crack the valve only part
ways. This caused propane to escape and the valve seal to wear. I had the
original tank removed and installed a new smaller tank, adding more storage
area.

Actually, it's mine, and a yes yes Razz , you can't see it in this picture but it is sealed, this one is paralleled with the one under the dinette and is used for LP gas for the engine. Installed by an authorized company ages ago, it must have been installed back in the '80s. Both tanks are vented through the floor to the outside, smelled gas once while standing next to the MH on a hot day, we had it just filled up and were parked in the sun, inside there was no smell so the tank vented correctly to the outside and all seals are intact.

My now gone '78' SOB had a horizontal metal propane tank mounted on the frame under the coach. There was a door to access from the side and no floor so it was wide open for ventilation.

the bad side was all the spray from the road, including road salts sprayed all over that tank. It was completely rusted, including the plate that I had to keep trying to paint so it did not just rust away.

I don't believe propane offers a lot of support to rust ( oxydation ) so rust from the inside should not be a big concern. but I was always concerned about the tank getting a leak from the outside rust. Before I had made the decision to junk the SOB, I had considered replacing the tank as it was well after any hopes of saving it by painting. The Propane distributor never had a problem filling it, even when at its worst looking condition. they always looked it over before filling it.

Ed, I see you're in the KC area, so want to let you know about an
upcoming rally.

The Flatlander GMC club is having its annual "test your heater" rally
and bean feed this next Wed, Thur, and Friday (Oct 26, 27, 28) at Pomona
Lake Outlet Park, in Kansas. Our members are mostly from Kansas and
Missouri -- several are in the Kansas City area. We'd love to have
you join us. There will be several SOBs there (that's Some Other Brand
RVs), and several people staying in a motel, as well as a few GMCs. Or,
just come down for the day. You can contact Jean Lawhorn at
jeanlawhorn at hotmail dot com by Oct. 20 so we'll be sure to have
plenty of beans 8>).
(Jean can also give you motel info, and tell you all about the Flatlanders).

Margie

PS. This is an open invite, so you'all come if you're in the area --
or passing through.

Margie

Took my royale in this morning for the propane test required by my ins. co. They wouldn't pass the the Brummer Engineering tank because it doesn't have a Candian Registion Number [CRN] on it. Only required in Canada not the US.
I got in touch with Manchester Tank which has warehouse in Tilsonburg On. and spoke with the manager who confirmed that CRN is required in Canada. He also told me that they had purchased Brummer a number of years ago. He wants me to take a photo of it to see if he can match it up.
My question is..did any other Canadian GMC owners have this problem or is it just me?
Also has anyone gone to an all electric coach?

The problem with an all electric coach is the heating. I am sure you can install enough electric heat but you will need to be plugged in our run the generator full time when heat is needed. There are plenty of high efficiency 12 volt refrigerators and running a generator for cooking is not that bad. You will probably need at least 400 amp hours in your battery bank.

I would like to thank Bruce Hislop who called me at home and gave me the name of the rv dealer he used. I called the dealer and they had an opening yesterday at 4pm. All they were concerned about were leaks not the tank registration number.
Now the bad news..The stove, furnace and water heater had leaks that couldn't easily be repaired so we capped the appliance lines. They did a pressure test and still had leak. Well wouldnt you know it, the tank had a leak in the shut off value. We ended up pulling the tank and replacing it with a horizontal 20# tank.
The dealer spent 6 hours repairing and replacing parts and only charged me for 3 hours. I will be back there next spring to get everything ship shape. The tech told me I was very lucky that nothing serious happened with all these leaks. I guess the sniffer isn't working.
The good news...I have the propane clearance cert. required by my ins. co.

Good to see you. Sorry that we missed connections on the lunch. I will take
care of lunch somewhere down the road. Good to see what your inventory is
like. (substantial). I think all people named Jim have similar offices. My
houskeeper gives me heck every time she cleans for me. <Grin>

We should all donate a day of our time when down there visiting Jim and do
some "Filing" but then how would he find anything.
He just knows where everything is and everything has its place no matter
how it looks to an outsider.
Hope you are enjoying good health Jim, so many are counting on you.
You have make bright days, months and years with your work - Thank you.
Best Regards on this Black Day

Dwayne, are you going to be at Ferndale? Need to talk about Sea to Sea.
Might be interested in making the whole trip. Trying to schedule trips for
2012.
