Well, the "Big Storm" ended here about 3PM. I got on the tractor and plowed out 5 houses including my 400 foot driveway and the neighbor's 400 foot driveway. I now have lots of snow piles 6 to 8 feet high all over the place. The county already had the roads plowed before I started so I went down the road and plowed out all of the mailboxes. That will make Debby our mail lady happy tomorrow.

We were finished and the tractor put away by 7PM. We went out with a ruler and measured the snow in several places in the front yard. It looks like we got 18+ inches of snow.

All of the auto traffic around here seems to be moving just fine. I went to the gas station in town to fill up with diesel for the tractor. Then we stopped at the grocery store and a local sports bar on the way back. Everything is fine here.

The TV says that the Chicago patronage workers are having a heck of a time clearing snow in Chicago. It sounds like nothing has changed since 1979 when every suburb and rural area could clear their snow with no problems but Chicago has a mess. I worked in the center of Chicago at the time and commuted in from rural Indiana daily. There was no problem anywhere until you hit the city limits of Chicago. This went on for weeks. They eventually got a new mayor because of it. The current mayor has already said he would not run again so a snow problem is no big deal to him.

Some things never change.

Sorry fellows, but here in North Carolina we had almost 70 degree weather yesterday and a lot of sunshine. I even got a little work done on the motorhome. Our turn on snow will probably be next since we live at the base of the mountains but we had our share of snow twice this year.

We didn't get too much snow in Santa Fe but south of Albuquerque they have closed down I-25 all the way down to the bottom of the state because of snow and ice

My only problem is that I woke up this morning to -18 degrees outside and the inside of my house is only 61 degrees. For some reason my hot water boiler furnace is not keeping up with the low temperatures outside. It is going on 18 years old and probably need the tubes reamed out due to calcium deposits but we can't shut it down for any repair right now.

Just north of us at Angel Fire they are reporting -31 degrees right now. The news said that every major city in New Mexico was below zero last night.

I wonder if there isn't something like cooling system flush for cars that you could add to the existing water. Then let it circulate for a while to dissolve the calcium. Finally flush the system and get rid of the calcium. If there is such a product, when I was finished flushing I would refill the system with distilled water. We had a similar problem with our in floor heating at the airport. It had turned black with some kind of bacteria. The introduction of a gallon of bleach cleared it up immediately. Then we flushed the system and refilled it with distilled water. The black bacteria has never returned. We have a spinnning wheel with a sight glass so we can observe the water flowing in the system at any time.

-12 here this morning. I'm glad I did the plowing yesterday. I'll have to go to the airport and plow out my and several other hangers. That project is waiting until Saturday when it is suppose to be +29.

I see Gene commenting on 70 degree weather in NC. On several occasions I have been in the RDU area when it snowed. Those people go nuts and shut down everything for an inch or two of snow.

<< Those people go nuts and shut down everything for an inch or two of snow>>

It's not the snow that's the problem down here in balmy climes.

The little bit of snow melts every day and freezes again every night into a thin super slick layer of ice. Sand it, and it washes off and as the ices melts. Then more snow melts into more thin super slick ice again at night.

The ice has made a great welcome for the Wisconsin and Pittsburg folks here for the Super Bowl.

We spent Christmas near Athens, GA this past year. On Saturday it started
snowing (the streets were melting what fell). By 8PM that evening several
churches had called off services for Sunday morning. Well, on Sunday morning
there was almost an inch or snow. What ice there was had to be in the shade
and away from anything that moved.

Crazy.

Between snow blowing before work and after work yesterday, I was behind our snow
blower for a total of 4 1/2 hours. Haven't seen a storm like this one in the
Milwaukee area for 10 -15 years. But, NICE sunny day today and gorgeous
outside. All the roads are clear and we're pretty much back to normal, cities
did a great job clearing roads, etc.

In the best interests of the residents of the fine state of Oregon, I will
refrain from announcing to the rest of the country that the winter weather
that usually blesses us with green trees and beautiful willamette valley
grain, row crop and fruit trees has kinda skipped over us and has landed
somewhere east of Denver. Visibility in the valley has been nothing short of
spectacular in the last few days. Sorry about what you folks in the East
have had to deal with in the last several days.

Ken,

I was born and raised in West Virginia and we were very content with all the snow we had and more than once we had 36 inches over night. The trouble here in North Carolina is people do not see snow very often and usually just an inch when it does snow which doesn't last more than one day. Here I never go out of my driveway when it snows because someone will run into you. Even on rainy days we can go over to Statesville on I-40 and see two or three cars wrecked along the highway. Still go 70 mph and jsooner or later just slide off the highway. .

Wow,,,I started this one and didn't think it'd grow this big. Emery sure does have some cold,,,Ken's got more snow than we got. Looks like 13" on top of a 1/4 inch of ice. Spent about 6 hrs behind the snow blower. 14 driveways. Took my soninlaw and after lunch the #2 daughter. The've got 3 girls(I have 7 grandkids at the age of 49) and are very poor. 4 free drive ways, 10 drives for pay,,,,,350 bucks. Gave most of it to them. Not bad. Very tired. Had to do the rest of my 2 drives today,,,,,,stay warm,,,,PL

Sante Fe made the weather news here in Seattle with a current temp of -9* @ 1600 hrs PST. It may rain on occasion in Seattle but I left those temps in Nova Scotia 45 years ago.
Your boiler tubes may have calcium build-up but more than likely the HVAC engineer didn't plan on temps of -18* for extended periods. Hope all you warm up soon

I'm familiar with that black boiler water funk too. Nasty smelling stuff. I had to so some rerouting of copper pipes at my friends and when I cut the pipes it was nastly. I drained the system and when done let the city water flush through one zone at a time in the process of getting the air out. I think I got it mostly out. You would think that the temp and pressure in the system would exclude that problem. I don't think distilled would be practicle and the system is on line with city water anyway. Emery have you tryed just opening the boiler drain for some short blasts to get some sediment out? Of course then the drain always leaks......

When I was working at the Electric Company, ( not the tv show, darn it ), One of the Turbine supervisors used to work for his brother at a home for elderly folk. He used to bring a peanut butter jar full of a pink liquid that was used Just for cleaning out hot water systems.... all calcium gone leaving clean metal.

You would pour this stuff in COLD water, and heat it up. Next time you looked at it, the calcium was gone and the metal was clean.

If you made the mistake to pour it into HOT water, you would get a VIOLENT reaction and all the water would FLY OUT OF THE POT... Rolling Eyes

I don't know the name of the stuff and the individual is retired in in arkansas now, I have no contact.

But this sounds like what you want if you can find it.

I'm South of the state line off of the Lake.

The storm started around 9p and my midnight, it was really blowing.
My and my neighbors ended up with 3 to 4 foot of snow in the front yards, most of the sides of the houses are filled in to the neighbors house. Snow blew up to the front to mid window and I had the Matterhorn in the back yard, around my truck, garage, and of course over the driveway.

I was lucky, only the bottom quarter of the back door was covered and I was able to get out to a shovel.

Neighbor across the street had a fairly even 3' across his entire yard.

Some building damage here and there, I seem to have missed that fun from the storm..... It was calm enough by 9am the next day to start moving snow.... took allday and still had some for the next day to do........

Keep smiling, The next one is supposed to miss Ray and I and will get you lower states and East and upper states and East....

We like to share, eh Ray

The little bit I know about boilers, they are, more or less, a closed system. Once the water has gone through the heating cycle, it is more or less, Clean. The minerals are limited and unless you have had leaks, you have had little water entry into the closed system.

Might look at your burners.

I notice there are some nice instant heat boilers now, very small, compact and pack a lot of heat... Not to say you need one but just a mention for information....

As our lights were flickering quite a lot last night, I wished I didn't have the coach at a storage area.
_______________________________________________-

Well ComEdy did more than just flicker up here.... I have certain devices I keep that do not reset to the proper time if the power goes out, and they were all flashing. Not to mention an electric timer that has batter back up ( which does not work ) so it was flashing too. They must have dropped power in the early morning since I was asleep, lulled by the whispering ROAR or the wind outside.....

Darn latch on the screen door froze open, I had to wire it shut so the wind would not send it to the next county, along with my house trim.....

That is what we heat the shop with at the airport with. Is is an in the concrete floor water circulation system and a small tankless water heater is all we use to run it. I was out there this morning while is was still below zero and the heater was just cycling occasionally. By the time I got there someone else stopped by with a snow blower and cleaned around my hanger so I do not have to haul my tractor out there. It looks like the drift they moved was almost 30". On the way out there all of the roads were clean and the state highways were dry. Heck I noticed that they even plowed the roads in the cemetery. All day I did not see a single snow plow anywhere. All of them, including the airport, were done for this storm and gone home. There are BIG piles of snow everywhere.

I talked to Blaine this evening and he has 3" of ice covered by snow. The county has all of the roads shut down until further notice. I figure it will be around April 1st when it finally thaws.

Ken

Larry,

If it worked all that well, it is probably no longer available or even illegal. If illiterate illegal immigrants can't put it on cereal, it is too toxic to be sold these days.
