If used with a 4-bag system, "properly rated" might only be a few hundred
pounds -- set the bag pressures so that the tiny spare only carries what
it's rated for. A simple proportion calculation of air pressures vs normal
tire loads would give an appropriate pressure for each bag. Even if it only
carried 100 lb, I'd prefer it to tying up the suspension arm.

Measure the space allowed then measure the wheel and tire. I felt it
would have scuffed the tire badly going over speed bumps and secondary
roads. Seems like an ideal place if you can get by with a properly rated
but skinny tire.

Wonder how a smaller spare would work....like a GMC equivalent to one of those small spares like the cars now use. ...
For any storage place other than the stock, the large offset of our dually designed wheels adds to the storage space required for a spare. Bert Curtis told me about his idea of using a narrow single type rim and mounting under the coach. His thought (at the time) is to only use it on the FRONT. (Where the lack of offset would be like installing spacers.) Moving a front tire to the rear of necessary.

Bert has made many changes to his coach to increase storage... keeping it all inside the coach body for a cleaner look.

Ray,

I left the spare tire in the rear but slipped a hitch rack with an aluminum toolbox that I picked up on sale at PEP BOYS. One of our Tidewater crabs went one step farther with a deeper box. I'd do it but the box would hide my rear license plate and living near the county courthouse I know I'd get picked up.

Mount the tag on the box and add a light.

Curtis of fiberglas fame uses a thin spair tire mounted up under the
back end and a PU truck tire lift like Toyota uses on the Tacoma PU.
Bob Gummersall didn't carry a spare at all. Never needed one but his
plan was to call for a new tire when road service came out. Personaly
I keep pretty new tires on my rig and never have used a spare tire.
Only flat I have had was a nail and I was able to pump it up and drive
over to the tire shop..........Terry

I believe that is how Mr Greenberg ran for years; no spare, just his credit
card and road service. I'm sure he jump in on this............

removed it I was struck by how nice these coaches look with no tire back
there. I'm seriously thinking about yanking the bracket as well. I've never
had the need for a spare in 20 or so years--on the other hand I suspect the
minute I don't have it ...... Are any others running with no spare?

I looked into that possibility but you wouldn't have enough room for the
tire we use.
You would need a super skinny tire which wouldn't carry the weight.

Try it Bob, you'll like it. I fugure if the busses plus the big SOBs
(Prevosts, Newell, Foretravels) can run sansAspare why not me.

I also removed my ladder, after I removed the pod, and the coach looked
like it did in the early advertisements.

Ron Tase did just that when he owned the 31' stretch (now owned by a

frankly, I'm to the point that if the tire does whatever it wants to do, I'll call roadside service anyway. Running a standard size, I'm not to worried about availability if the entire tire is frapped.
