Ken -
I may look at gmail, it would have to be solely for the GMC stuff. I'm not prepared to change addresses for the rest of the stuff I work with, it's too great a hassle. I forget why I opted for Yahoo over Gmail but it seemed like a good reason at the time.

Chris -
In order to compare equivalent stuff, the closest Honda is their 7000 Watt set. Weighs 262 pounds dry. The 236 on the heathen chinee set is with fuel, consequently, it's lighter than the Honda. To compare to the 4000 series Honda, I'd need two of them, substantially heavier - and won't fit anyway. The 7KW Honda is an inverter set which I don't want, and it goes for $4 Large, which I ain't gonna pay. Their 6500 Watt contractor set weighs 220 pounds dry, with fuel it exceeds the one I got. $2200, and the ad doesn't mention the electric self-commencer. Short the gas tank, gas, and frame, the heathen chinee one is a bit under 200 pounds. More than the Generac, less than the Onan. Incidentally, HF was down to $537 on the coupon book I just got. Thus less than $600 all up. So, I could buy three of them for one Honda, three will easily outlast the one.

Actually, this setup is typical Harbor Freight. For infrequent use, their stuff is usually a bargain. If it's used daily, probably something of higher quality would be the move. When I worked for Mac's, my box was all Snap-On and Mac Tools. Now, it's assorted, depending on use. Decent wrenches, cheap infrequent use stuff.

Hi, Johnny!

One favorite story my one-time employer told was similar to your third sentence.

Hay yall, watch this!!!

I have seen the new genset run in the coach off the coach fuel supply with my own two eyes. I found several things out, not all entirely bad. I wondered if I needed a priming system as Ken H has, so I plumbed everything up, set it to run, and counted yanks. After three weeks of sitting since it was test run in the initial frame, it took 12 yaks to start it. This is within the capability of the electric starter, so I suspect a primer isn't necessary. I ran it unloaded - the AC wires are simply tied out of the way of each other for testing - and it didn't heat the bay or the set over much. This with the bay door open and no forced cooling, only the engine fan in the set. Consequently, I think with the door fan running it will stay cool. I found out, even with the neutral feeds loose, if you reach across to the governor arm and inadvertently brush one of the alternator hot leads, it will whack the schiess out of you. Although it jumps about on the shock mounts a bit at crankup and shutdown, and a bit less when the load changes, at no time does anything hit anything. The clearances are sufficient. At startup, I got a bit of a spit out of the relief hole on the back of the pulse pump. If it does this again, I will send it back for a replacement. The bulk of the noise comes from the unsilenced air box. It isn't great even with the door open. I suspect with it closed it won't be a great problem. I didn't go in the coach, I've no idea how loud it is in there (I wanted to watch it closely for the initial run). The idea of putting the pulse fitting in the dipstick works flawlessly. Pictures of this mod will go on the picture site shortly. I'm going to put a quick connect of some sort in the pulse hose so taking the dipstick out won't require removing the hose from the fitting. If this becomes too onerous, the engine has two oil drains, one on each side. I can put a standpipe in the rear one and pulse off of that. There are no fittings which go into the crankcase except the low oil sensor, and it fits from the inside. Drilling a hole as KenH did would have required disassembly I'm not ready to attack, or hoping no drill metal fell into the inside of the engine. not a risk I want to take. The proper way, of course, would be to drill and tap the case and screw a fitting into it for the hose. I'm measuring to see if I can saw up the power panel that came on the frame and use it to mount the relays and breakers. I don't need the outlets, just three breakers, a light, and a switch. Power wiring is next, and then a couple of hours run-in loaded with the coach systems.

Pictures of the dipstick drilled and fitted with a hose barb are on the picture site. What you don't see is the quick setting epoxy I put on it after I set the fitting. Should the fitting come out, I'll get a bit of oil spray for the two minutes it takes the engine to empty the carb and quit. Under load, I expect that would drop to half a minute. Note the drill holes are offset, which will limit any spray that might come out, and also limit oil into the pulse hose. Right now it has a manual choke. I may add a solenoid off the starter to pull it against a spring when the starter is engaged, dunno if it's needed yet.

Yeh, it will either have proved itself or showed up as a Very Bad Idea by then. I think the former is the move. As to details of the pulse pump there aren't any. Black plastic monolith with three pipes. Gas goes in one, comes out one, and the third gets air pulses from the crankcase. Right now the fuel hoses are cut to length and the pump is suspended on them, awaiting bolting to the bay wall. Genset wiring is ty-raped to parts of the machine to keep them out of the way for testing. Once the wiring harnesses are clamped and run to the appropriate places and the breakers and switch installed instead of dangling, I'll take some final pictures. I have to draw out the DC schematic tonight.

It is stamped Mikuni. I got it off eBay, searched for 'pulse fuel pump' and got a bunch of hits. In keeping with the whole project, I bought the cheapest one. It looks just like this one:

I put a pulse pump on my Honda 6500 inverter gen, works perfect, I drilled the valve cover bolt horiz/vert and pushed a vacuum fitting into the hole. Electric start, wired to original onan interior switch.

Yeah, the beauty of the pulse pumps is, if the fitting fails or falls off, the genset stops before too much oil sprays out.

Good idea saving $10 and buying a Chinese knockoff fuel pump for the Chinese knockoff generator. There is no point having the pump outlast the generator.

The one in the link says Mikuna, and says from China. There is one on ebay that looks like it is not made in China for about a dollar less, shipped from FL.

Well, I'm not taking the dam' thing off to see how it is spelled. Ever seen Shoupie laundry markers? Look a LOT like Sharpie. Anyway pictures are up of the plumbing and the pump mount. Also a picture of the modified control panel which came with the set. I modified it to clear the fan with a B & D clone of a Dremel tool. It will mount on a couple of pieces of aluminum angle using existing bolts. I'll ty-rap and clamp the harnesses also. I'm leaning towards keeping my automatic swap shore to genset. The relay is rated 30 Amps each side, the genset is limited to 28, it ought to work. It will require commoning the neutrals, I don't see this as a great problem. At least until my 50 amp cord shows up. The shore cord bay isn't big enough for a plug from the genset anyway. In reviewing all my photos, I notice the photo site censored the word 'penis'. Surprising, but the the State of Georgia wouldn't sell it to me on a license plate either.... and 'talleywhacker' had more letters than would fit. So the red hotroad fitted a standard plate.
In the final analysis, Ken's looks better than mine, but mine makes more power than his. After all, he was a Field Grade officer, while I was a common master sergeant. There's a moral here.

Well, it's in and running and working. only minor hiccups, pictures on Monday. With the door closed, the top of the bay in back gets up to 180 in places according to my IR gun. Exhaust pipe is ~~400 degrees at the engine, 340 at the muffler input. I may fiddle around with some flashing tin and see if I can get the air stirring in the top rear of the compartment The engine fan blows out the opening fairly well already. 180 isn't earthshakin, but I believe it can be got a bit lower. I think with one piece, I can direct the air blast across the pipe and out the opening a bit better.
Ken, what does the roof of your bay measure?

Johnny,

I don't think I've ever checked it. I will the next time I run it long
enough to get hot. But even the hottest spot I've found on the engine
itself has never read over about 190*F. My air circulation seems pretty
effective. The reason I've never worried much about the compartment temp
is that it's about 22 g. galvanized sheet metal, well sealed, with 1" of
aluminum clad fiberglass "duct board covering it inside the coach.

We're taking the coach to a local Tin Can Tourists rally tomorrow morning;
maybe I'll get a chance to run the gen.
