I stuff five qts in mine at change, and it shows full hot. 1500 miles or more, it's down a half, so I surmise the stick is reasonably accurate. I change it either around 3K or in the spring if it hasn't seen 3K yet.
I got to ask though. Matt's comment says 'non-synthetic oil'. Howcome?

--johnny

Johnny,

Good Question.....

Very simple, if you have a lube oil consumption issue.
I my experience, synthetic won't help.
It's long life will be no gain,
and it also costs more.
AND, there is a situation I have seen (and KenB also reported) that synthetics can form hard (not quite glass hard) deposits in the combustion chamber.

If anyone is concerned about what effect the cooler and lines have on oil level, it is an easy exercise to just remove the cooler sandwich adapter and run the engine with just a filter. Then KenB's 5qt procedure will be about as close as your gonna get without using more complicated measurements and calculations. Once the correct(desired) level is established, you just reconnect the cooler and adjust oil level to your new full mark. Why make an easy process more complicated? The 5qt rule had worked well for many of us without any apparent negative effects.

David,

When all else fails read the manual. In this case it is X-7725 / Section - 0 / General Information / Page 0 -11

Recommended Fluids and Lubricants

Usage: Engine oil
Fluid / Lubricant: High Quality SE oil (now up to SN)
Capacities: 5 qts. (6 w/filter)

If you don't have a manual it can be downloaded here:

http://www.bdub.net/factory-manuals.html

And I mis-typed. I put in 6 with the filter. Sorry for the misinformation.

Dave,

This may all seem confusing because it is......
You should have a 403, and I don't know how different that really is.
I would suggest that you start out following the instructions.
Fill 6 quarts with a filter and 5 without.

Some of us see the top quart go a way real fast (like 500 or fewer miles).
If that is what you see, then wait, there is still room. If the next quart takes 1000~1500 miles to leave, don't bother topping it off.
On the next change, go with 5 quarts.

Brian,

One the problems with no geo ref in a sigfile is that nobody that could could help knows where you are.
If you are having steering problems, start by reading the manual and centering the steering box.
This is Section 9-39 figure 64 in manual X7525.
If that doesn't fix it, you need to get Rob Muellers page from GMC Eastern States and fine the bad elements.

These coaches can be a pleasure to drive.
