On our return trip from Az when we bought ours 2 years ago we saw temps of 250 on both oil and transmission. I did my best to get them back down but in the desert you fight a losing battle if you don't have a very good cooler. All we had was a round tube aluminum with no fan mounted behind the grill and the engine cooler was behind the bumper mounted at the bottom of the radiator...no fan. I bought a Derale plate and fin type, fully shrouded, fan cooled unit for the transmission, removed the engine cooler and installed the Trans-Dapt dual 1 qt remote filter and mounted it behind the passenger wheel well on the fire wall. I run my transmission fluid through the Derale unit first then to the cooler in the radiator....I figure the hotter the fluid going into the fluid-to-air cooler the more efficient and should I ever be in that low temp range (I think at -40 Dexron III was a 1200 viscosity) the fluid will will be warmed close to optimum temps.

A friend of mine years back ran Henrys Transmissions in Charleston (one of the best auto-transmission guys I ever know) and he preached temperature control. Ask him about auxiliary filter and he replied...'keep it cool, you already have a filter, too much heat is the worst thing you can do to one.'

G'day,

I Googled "Transmission Fluid Temperature Chart" and here's the link:

https://www.google.com.au/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=QB0yU7DrA6uN8QfHmIC4Ag#q=transmission+fluid+temperature+chart

I looked the charts over and downloaded this one:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/random-photos/p44254-transmission-fluid-tem.html

There's HEAPS more and they're not all exactly the same, however, they do show that you want to keep your trans temp around 175° F
for the best transmission life.

I have an aluminum radiator and an air/trans cooler in Double Trouble and (from memory!) it runs around 160° F when the OAT is 90° F
or below at highway speeds.

I have noticed excursions above 200° F on occasions (pulling a steep grade on really hot days) but not for long periods of time and
while I realize they do affect transmission life I am not particularly concerned when it happens.

Regards,

I'm going to address the transmission temp statement...my FSM says 170 is normal. I've seen graphs that show expected transmission
life at different temps and once you go over 200 you are 1/2 lifing the transmission.

Maybe your manual says different.
