Note that Keith was talking about his transmission, not the power steering pump. He just said it sounded like the pump.

The little specks in the pan are usually from the clutch plates in the transmission. They are often silver and brass colored. It is not uncommon to find them in the transmission pan as the plates / pads wear.

I once had a transmission shop that was changing my transmission fluid and filter that I needed a complete rebuild and they showed me the metallic residue in the pan as proof.
I told them to just replace the filter and fluid and put the pan back on.

I drove that vehicle for another 6 years before selling it and the transmission was still working fine.
