I put a serpentine on my 455 in 2000. Got it as a kit from a GMC vendor.
I thought it was a great upgrade.
On my first t trip, I noticed the water temp was reading higher than norm 210.
Changed the fan clutch several times. At the time there were issues
with Haden having the fan clutches in Mexico and quality control
wasn't the same. The temp situation didn't improve. I ordered a water
pump from another GMC vendor that claimed it was a reverse rotation
pump. Only it was no different than the one I had with the cast
impeller. When I contacted the vendor to return it and get my money
back, he would only give credit.
I looked around, found an aluminum water pump. Took it to a shop to
remove the guts. I than machined the inside and welded new tabs so it
would be a true reverse flow. Went back to the shop and they put the
guts back.
Now the temp was just like before and the fan clutch came on when I
started the engine and uphill situations.
So now my confidence was high. We took the coach to the International
convention in Oregon. On the way there, I replaced 4 belts.
The a/c compressor is out more than original, very close to the
vertical bars (unique to the 73/74 coaches) and when it hit on hard
pulls, the belt would shred. I had to remove the clutch on the
compressor so I would have clearance. So no a/c but I was worried
about turning it on anyway. When we left the convention, I made it
less than a mile when I heard the freighing again. Returned to the
parking lot and asked for help. Emery came to the rescue. We checked
for binding but all the pulley were free. Checked for alignment and
the power steering pump wasn't quite aligned. A couple of washers
corrected the problem. On the way home, replaced 2 belts. But just
before we got home, the water pump started making noises. I finally
gave up and went back to original.
I really like the idea of a serpentine setup, and I have on on my
current setup (diesel) but the distance between the a/c compressor and
the alternator is too far. In my opinion, one or the other or both
need to re relocated.
