We are the same way.
In fact our daughter hated camping at "Camp Wal-Mart" with her husband.
He wanted to save $'s.
She would go in the Wal-Mart and spend as much or more then it would cost
for a real camp ground.
They no longer camp at "Camp Wal-Mart" as she called it.
It is about the trip.

PS The only time we camp in a parking lot was in Bishop CA for Mule Days.
It was still about the trip we could walk less then two blocks to the Bishop
Fair Grounds.

All this talk about freebies. When we stop for the night, I want
quality. I don't want to listen to big rigs pulling in and out all
night, hookers knocking on doors, bums hawking jewelry and some dude
begging for the las $5 so he can get enough gas to get to wherever. I
also don't want to walk across a parking lot with an inch of grease
and oil covering it. I want a place where we can walk the dogs, put
out the chairs, rustle someting up on the grill etc. It has always
been the trip for us, not the destination.
