You are right, dist diaphram must see 0 vacuum at idle, I think he is talking about what he sees at the ported output.

BTW guys, I betcha 50% of the coaches I run into has manifold vacuum to the dist.  The old story is never have a Chevy Man work on an Olds motor (except Steve F. that is).  They for some reason always connect the dist to manifold vacuum.  When they do this the motor retards the degrees set on acceleration-- no wonder the coach will roll like a flat rock!  Please guys, go check your coach, you might be surprised what you find!  Many tachs don;t recognize how important the vacuum routing is!

Can you tell this is a soap box I stand on?

Are you sure you meant "manifold" vacuum?
If so, the advance will lose vacuum off idle and timing will retard.
The GM vacuum advance should be connected to ported vacuum.
