From what I have read here over the past years,
it would seem to me that a good idea would be to
install a new fusible link OUTSIDE of the wiring
harness. This would avoid having a severely melted
link from destroying an entire harness as has been
reported.

I was just about to comment on the fusible link topic, but Ken B covered it very well.
I don’t have the schematic in front of me but from memory is that add on breaker were to open, charge Voltage would overshoot high, That could cause
secondary damage.
There was pretty much a “reason why” behind everything engineers did. Only understanding part of the picture and not the whole scope leads to
problems when people try to improve on designs.
