Curious about whether anyone has tried this ...speaking to someone today who said it might be an idea to replace the steering box with a (new) larger unit from a heavy duty truck.
What do we think about going that route? possible? unnecessary? easy/difficult to fit?

Larry

You don't want to go that route due to the fact that the number of turns "lock to lock" needs to be limited to ~3 1/3 turns of the steering wheel. Any more than that will damage the knuckles etc. As was probably mentioned before, even the same steering boxes from the auto parts store, like for a pickup truck, will have more turns and that would be bad. Ask Dave L. about this as he has seen boxes from trucks that can't be used for his rebuilding.
