Was the water heated by the electric system or by the engine coolant loop through the water heater? If you had the engine running anytime in the previous few hours the water will be scalding hot. There is no easy way to control the engine heater loop. If was heated by the electrical element then the comments made by others are good.
To solve this on our '74 I installed a thermostatic mixer valve in the hot water line.
