There is a metal cover on the face Remove that and beneath it are the thermostat (called Control assembly in the manual).and the heating element.

Do you have the GMC motorhome maintenance manual X7525 ? On page 24J-20 is the Type 1 water heater with the square case and on page 24
J-21 is Type 2 with the round case. The Control Assembly is under the cover right above the heater element.
