Mac,
Agreed, painting the fuel tanks only delays the inevitable, heat convected from the engine and radiated from the road eventually
raises the temperature to a point that causes problems.

Regarding the painted fuel cells:
Lots of folks here on the list have painted the underside of their
fuel tanks white, to help reduce (hopefully) heat gain from the
heat of the pavement from heating the fuel. All to hopefully cut
down the likelihood of vapor lock.
I imagine with your background, you won't be relying on the OEM
mechanical fuel pump, but I'm sure you also realize the benefit
of not overlooking ANY possible source of difficulties.
BTW, no preference here on engine paint color.
