I tore the switch apart and the problem seems to be a design flaw. the plastic slider is shorter than the hole that the protrusion sticks out through leaving only a narrow .090" strip of the frame to resist the rocking forces put on the switch when operating it. The frame was bowed out in this area allowing the slider to rock and hook on the edge of the opening and causing more strain on the thin strip at the bottom of the hole. The design was good enough to work as long as the switch moved freely but once the lube was gone then it started to fail.

Here is the switch opened up.

Showing the slider is shorter than the opening.

A bit of hammer and dolly work and I had the switch back in shape and a little sanding had the burs on the plastic slider removed I reassembled the switch and switched it a few times and the bowing was starting to show again so apart it came again, straitened it out again and added a stiffening lip across the bottom narrow strip to help distribute the load, I also bowed it in a little to adjust out the rocking of the slider as you operate it. The other change I made was to tie the tabs that are bent over the bottom of the switch to hold it together to keep the rocking force from spreading the frame and starting down this path again. a little lube and it's in and working, we'll see for how long.

Here is the added structure I added.

Another angle of the lip.
