David, yes, they are spring loaded, usually on the tail end of the coach.
Most people do not posses enough hand/wrist strength to hold the spring by
the cast piece that says zip-dee. I take a 18" piece of square tubing the
same dimensions as the attachment arm, and bolt it to the casting as a
handle. Leave the awning clamped onto the coach, remove the lower bolts on
the attachment arm so that is free from the coach. Then, remove the bolt
and nut through the casting, remove the arm and replace it with the 18"
handle you made. ONLY AFTER YOU HAVE BOLTED THAT HANDLE SECURELY TO THE
CASTING DO YOU EVEN CONSIDER LOOSENING THAT CLAMP WHEEL ON THE CASTING.
YES, I AM SHOUTING HERE. WEAR GLOVES AND HOLD ON TO THAT HANDLE SECURELY.
IF IT SLIPS OUT OF YOUR HAND, BAD STUFF WILL HAPPEN TO YOUR BODY. ask me
how I know that. You will be able to hold the awning far enough away from
the coach to unwind the spring. COUNT THE TURNS, YOU WILL NEED TO
PRE-TENSION THE SPRING WHEN YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER. BE CAREFUL. THINK ALL
MOVES BEFORE YOU TAKE THEM. DRINK ALCOHOL ONLY AFTER THIS JOB. NOT BEFORE.
