You want to be careful fiddling with the series resistor - the shutoff method is to simply short the hot end of that relay's coil to ground either through the switch or an SCR. So, it has to dissipate the current from the stay alive windings, and needs to limit that current as well. Col Ken had a document which had a substitute part number which was a direct electrical replacement, although you'll need to cobble a mount. #14 or #16 copper bus bar should work fine.
