Had the same on the steel spring frame. Took the upholstery off ( that set
up was bulky and heavy) and placed the slip covered Foam with memory foam
loose on top of the frame, makes it easy to remove the mattress then the
frame to get into the space.
Cut the height of the cabinet down - it will give you more elbow room. I
also insulated the side walls then put thin ply on and covered the ply with
indoor/outdoor carpet - even over the ledge on the drivers side twin.
