The Miata was designed and built in Hiroshima Japan. The lead planner was Bob Hall, twin brother to my then planner Jim Hall who you see on TV all the time. The designer was Mark Jordan--son of the famous GM designer Chuck Jordan. To my knowledge, the Miata was never built in the US. However, the stories of the exhaust tuning are correct. Jim, Bob and myself spent a week in the wine country of California evaluating one of the first prototypes.
