It appears we both agree that one shouldn't be messing with the steering box without following the MM.

I appreciate you pointing me at 9-37; after reading the STEERING GEAR ADJUSTMENTS I realized that both the THRUST BEARING ADJUSTMENT
and the PITMAN SHAFT "OVER CENTER" SECTOR ADJUSTMENT should be performed in the sequence in the manual.

Now to pat us on the back - you or I could probably adjust it in the vehicle because we're fairly mechanically inclined, however,
one must keep the mechanically declined / challenged in mind and that's what the MM does! ;-)

When I attended the Coos Bay Rally I gave a presentation based on the Steering Inspection Guide; when I got to the steering box I
SPECIFICALLY noted NOT to adjust in the vehicle and why NOT to adjust it in the vehicle. Five minutes later someone came up to me
and informed me that one of the guys went out to the parking lot and adjusted his. WTH?

However, John's approach is what I used to do until I did find out that it no good, if you have a worn out steering box and a PO has
been adjusting it earlier and then you adjust it some more you could experience that the balls lock up, not good at all.
It is actually where you adjust the "over the center" preload.

Then if you take a look at X7525 9-37 you will see how you do the adjustments, we are after the thrust bearing adjustment and this
is the right way to remove the slack.

But not that it is not recommended to do this in the vehicle (But you can and it works, I know ;) )
