The answer is pretty simple Rob No.

However, John's approach is what I used to do until I did find out that it is no good, if you have a worn out steering box and a PO has been adjusting it earlier and then you adjust it some more you could experience that the balls lock up, not good at all.
It is actually where you adjust the "over the center" preload.

Then if you take a look at X7525 9-37 you will see how you do the adjustments, we are after the thrust bearing adjustment and this is the right way to remove the slack.
But note that it is not recommended to do this in the vehicle ( But you can and it works, I know Wink )

I have read the responses above and I'm going to ask one question.

The section on the Steering Gear Box 18 pages long with specific steps that detail measurements, torques; and settings to adjust it properly; do you really think it's a good idea to do anything to it that doesn't follow those instructions to the letter?
