Engineers are smart, they have to design in maintenance costs so the average person will go out and buy a new vehicle when they need to replace a headlight. If things were inexpensive to maintain and lasted forever there would be less inclination to buy a new vehicle. I'm sure there is also pressure to make things take long enough so us mechanics can feed our family's and perhaps save enough to convince our children to get a higher education, and make the service department profitable. Look at Ford triton spark plugs.. After all the problems with them breaking off in the heads Ford has come out and said every 40000km or 25000 miles you should take those 120000 km or 80000 mile service life spark plugs out and reinstall them with fresh anti seize. Well all that is just to prevent lawsuits however it took one of our mechanics 12 hours for remove 5 broken plugs last week. If we're talking $120/hr labor rate your looking at a $1700 bill for spark plugs. Nobody works for free!

And if someone wants trany bolt measurements I can get to that Friday.
