I had an audio repair shop in a previous life. We were the warranty center for, among others, Akai. Every year, the factory ran a contest among its design engineers, and the winner got to come to this country for several weeks as the prize, and tour all the repair centers. Those guys learned quickly what worked in the field and what didn't, and they also had all the tricks to make their machines perform well. Since we were close to the Air War College/Staff and Command school/Squadron Officers' School, we saw a LOT of Akai product these guys brought back from overseas. One trick which I remember well was a sack full of capstan sleeves one of these guys gave me. Akai changed speeds by slipping a sleeve over the capstan to increase its diameter, and if they had too many miles on the capstan unsleeved, the flutter spec got out of hand. The Akai engineer gave me about a hundred sleeves he'd had made up with the inner diameter undersized by a couple or three ten-thousandths. Problem cured, and saved the customer a pot of money. We need more thinkers iike that designing things.
