That bogus "news" story reminds me of a couple other hatchet jobs the media did on other cars.

The first one that springs to mind was the "Audi unintended acceleration" issue from (IIRC) the 80's. Despite CLEAR evidence to the contrary, 60 Minutes presented the sensational story as if these evil cars really WERE taking off on their own (ignoring all the evidence they had to the contrary). They even "demonstrated" an Audi failing, by manually creating a number of very unlikely failures in the transmission and engine management systems (though they didn't 'fess up to their manipulation, but passed it off like a typical Audi). The nonsense wouldn't fool anyone who knew anything about cars (or physics!) but there are enough automotive illiterates out there that it nearly ruined Audi in the US.

Another was the media's fixation on the Suzuki Samurai (one of the favorite towds of the GMC world, of course). Because of the idiotic way the gov't decided to rate SUVs for rollover risk (basically height divided by width), the Samurai came out as the "worst". Of course, the gov't totally ignored "little stuff" like the actual center of gravity, so the Samurai was really better than a whole lot of other SUVs, but that didn't keep the media from piling on.

It's always important to remember how the media thinks - "never let the facts stand in the way of a good story".
