As the father of a child diagnosed with autism, the incorrect use of certain words can and does catch my attention. In this particular case, I understood what both Jared and Matt said initially and was not offended, but I can and will stand up when certain words are used in a potentially discriminatory or harmful manner towards the mentally challenged.

Words like "retard" may carry different meanings to different people. My teenage daughters have introduced me to a multitude of commonly misused words. I have done my best at informing them that some older folk and even those of different ethnic origin may misunderstand their use of those words. They generally understand and "adjust" their word usage to best match the group they are communicating with, out of respect.

On the web, we often write comments with a specific message in mind, only to have someone misunderstand what we meant to say. That can be one of the joys of language. Word selection can emphasize or minimize that effect, and we all should keep that in mind when addressing a public forum.

Matt take it how you want, it is no longer PC to consider any one with a mental or physical handicap "retarded". I never have used that word to
describe someone with any sort of limitation. If you choose to take it as a derogatory reference to someone with Downs, MS, CP, Parapalegic, then you
go ahead and take it that way..... which is overly PC. I use that word and so do many others to describe someone who has done or said something
stupid. Where I work, if someone makes a mistake and you call them a retard, they will laugh. If you call them stupid, you might get punched.

Strongly suggest all you want, it is my word and I will use it if it apropos.

I'm sure everyone else who read my previous post knew exactly what I was getting at, meaning they didn't take it the wrong way.
