Well, two nights ago was a huge contrast in RV Parks. All gravel, nearly
empty. Pulled in at 4:00 PM to an empty office. 107 degrees. Not a shade
tree in sight. Looked deserted. We all just plugged in, turned on the AC
and hibernated until nearly sunset. Then we said our goodbyes to Ron and
Pattie Smith, who were leaving for their new home near Mesa, AZ. Next day,
we left as early as we could, and headed out on the old route 66 for
Seligman and Oatman. Long straight drive, for a while and then OH BOY, the
road to Oatman we all made it up there. Town is full of Donkeys, both 2
legged and 4 legged varieties. Tourist trap of the first order, BUT YOU
CANNOT SAY THAT YOU DROVE THE OLD ROUTE 66 ROUTE UNTIL YOU SEE IT!
We were supposed to stay in Barstow and see a museum there, but we decided
to push on down the road to Hesperia, California. Stayed at the Desert
Willow RV Resort. BEAUTIFUL PARK. LOTS OF SHADE TREES AND THE FIRST GREEN
GRASS WE HAD SEEN IN DAYS. WINDY DINNER OUTSIDE IN THE SHADE. GREAT FOOD AS
ALWAYS. Today, we left at 8:00 AM and made a run for Santa Monica while it
was still cool. Arrived around 10:00 AM. Freeway traffic was light as it is
Sunday. Found a nearly empty parking lot and paid a ransom to park there,
but right on the beach within walking distance of the Santa Monica Famous
Pier and the West end of the old Route 66. Walked out to the end, took some
pictures, and had lunch. Presently at Malibu Beach RV Park overlooking the
Blue Pacific ocean. 80 degrees light breeze. Perfect end to a great trip.
We have another dinner planned for a bit later this evening.. What a ride,
only wish Dwayne and Sharon were here to enjoy it with us. We head for
Manny and Deo's tomorrow. Then to Jim K.'s then high tail it for home in
Salem, Or. Have to stop in to see Jerry Work and Sharon in Kerby, Or. on
the way.
Jim Hupy and Judy Countermine, with Glen and Darlene Gregory, John and Deb
Harper, and Donald and Billie Guttman. The final four at the end of the
trail.
