Well, Thursday with the GMC Route 66 Rolling Rally finds us at Oklahoma
City, OK. Presently experiencing an electrical storm with rain. No Hail as
of yet. Yesterday was a real scorcher. Ran generators and roof airs for
much of the afternoon. We were rejoined by John and Deb Harper last
evening. Camping World had them towed to a nearby specialty shop who deals
in Rochester Quadrajet Carbs. They took the carb off and put it on their
bench, and guess what. The float was sitting on the bottom of the float
bowl. The original carb, which Camping World replaced with a different year
carb, had a sunk float. The replacement carb ran from Tuscon to Potato
Creek State Park, IN. and from there to Chicago. When leaving, they were
experiencing rich running and stall outs. They limped in to the 4H
campground in Pontiac, IL. I took the carb apart and found the float full
of Gasoline. Soldered up the 3 leaks and we left for Springfield, IL. No
problems. Then on to Cahokia, IL where we again had problems. Ran rich, so
drove straight through to Randy VanWinkle's where I changed the float with
a new one. Wasn't quite right, a bit too high. Lowered the float level
beside the road. Got as far as Joplin, MO where it quit again. Went back to
Camping World on the Hook, about a 220 mile tow job. Now on float number 3.
This time we opted for a plastic one instead of a brass one. We will see
how far this one gets before it goes sideways. I have been working on
Quadrajets since the 70's when they first were introduced. Never have I
seen issues with the floats until now. Can't explain it. We leave for Elk
City, OK after a while. We will see how it does on the road.
