I assume that the engine came with a new distributor already installed.

I am guessing what you are hearing is ignition ping (knock) if this true then the ignition timing is advanced too much. There are 3 components to the timing. Static, mechanical, and vacuum. As a quick check you could disconnect the hose to the vacuum advance and see if the noise goes away. Simply pull the hose off and see if the symptoms change. If they do then you have verified this is an ignition advance problem.

Now the question is which of the three (static, mechanical, or vacuum) is the problem.

I would note exactly where the distributor is sitting rotation wise. Then grab the cap and try to rotate it counter clock wise. If it will move, rotate it slightly and tighten the bolt at the base of the distributor. If it still rattles slightly then rotate it a little more and tighten the bolt again. Someone forgot to tighten it on your engine install or you may have gotten some of the less than 87 octane gas that they sell at higher altitudes out west. Filling the tank with higher octane fuel would also help until you can get the timing set correctly.

There are other things that can cause ignition ping. These are just starters.

If it is not ping, then we need to start looking at mechanical things. I wish you were closer. I would come help.

I should have said this up front but CALL DICK P.
