Duane,

Another bunch of my suggestions which will be wrong, so you can eliminate them and find out what will really be the problem.

Here goes: Could the advance plate inside the distributor be hanging up? Too much advance causes knocking, thus the rattling noise? Or the distributor is set too far advanced (only if it has recently been fooled with)? Or the distributor hold down bolt is loose and the distributor has rotated, giving too much advance? What about the advance weights, are they rusted to their pivots stuck advanced, giving that rattling sound from knocking? They should snap shut when you advance them manually with the engine off. Check the advance springs, one per weight. Total of two inside the distributor. If you can somehow get it to high rpm with high torque, if the noise is spark knock, it shouldn't be as bad, as high rpm means the engine can tolerate more advance. Put it into second gear and see if the rattle disappears at the same road speed, even though you asking for more torque to equal the torque in drive gear. If so, suspect some problem with the advance mechanism, whether centrifugal or vacuum. You might pinch off the vacuum advance line, therefore disabling it, and it would give you ten degrees less advance. It might give less spark knock, but I think it would be far better to have it all working right.

Probably you have an electronic distributor and all this helpful advice is worthless.

Eliminating that, I just don't know. If it isn't spark knock, it sounds expensive, but you are due for a break.

Best,

Carey
