Sorry John, but the ignition coil and pickup coil must be matched in
polarity. GM color coded the wiring
so as to eliminate any possibility of mistake. The cars with right side
starters (Chevys, iron block Caddys &
Toronados) used one polarity and the left hand starters, which includes RWD
Olds, use the other.

Olds should be Olds as far as dist rotation. Thrust washers are also
different due to reverse gear bevel
Wire colors--- that's on the pickup coil not the ign coil, yes?
HEI V8 caps all the same with integral coil. There is also a smaller HEI
with remote coil came out later
