> Hey Jim, once you get all the accessories off (fuel pump, rear mount, electronics, etc) and pull the 4 long bolts should the bell housing just come off? That's what the manual seems to say, but I've beaten it silly with a nylon mallet and it won't budge. Any tricks? Thanks!
It won't "just come off" due to the tail bearing's slight press fit in the bell housing. Our technique is to maintain moderate (!) pressure using two prybars (err, screwdrivers) on diagonal corners between the bell housing and the corners of the field while having a helper knock on the motor mounts with a mallet. You may have to move the prybars to opposite corners during the process. Don't pry too hard, though, otherwise you may crack the bell housing. We've also had success applying gentle heat from a propane torch to the bell housing in the vicinity of the bearing.
The field assembly has an angled strap welded on each corner that serves as a good place to pry against. You don't want to pry anywhere else due to potential damage to the laminations.
