In my opinion it IS a common failure at this point based on the age of these machines. I've seen at least 14 units in the past four years with bad field assemblies. Another one came in yesterday; it is on the work bench right now getting its coils cut out in preparation for new copper ones. As usual the lower coil was the one with the damaged windings; the other three were intact.
Aluminum magnet wire in the presence of moisture, vibration and flying dust and debris is a recipe for trouble.

Hey Jim, once you get all the accessories off (fuel pump, rear mount, electronics, etc) and pull the 4 long bolts should the bell housing just come off? That's what the manual seems to say, but I've beaten it silly with a nylon mallet and it won't budge. Any tricks? Thanks!
