Skip,

Go to Figure 8.027 PUMP - OIL on page 8-15 in Parts Book 78Z and look at key
10 SHAFT ASSY - oil pump drive extension and you'll see it on the shaft.

Have pulled the distributor on my 74 canyonlands to replace a blown intake
gasket. The PO had put on an edelbrock top end kit heads, cam, mainfold,
carb during his major hotrod rebuild. It's the distributor that originally
had points. While checking for trash in the hole it came out of saw a small
washer on the hole where the oil pump driveshaft goes down. Got it out and
it was a lite weight washer with 6 internal star points inside sorta like
that would be used just to place something for assembly. Half of the points
are missing. There are marks on the oilpump shaft where it once was attached
but it doesn't seem to being much good now since it came off the shaft and
was left inside. After all that, has anyone ever seen this before or does
anyone know if it's really needed. Never noticed it before on all the GM
distributors I've pulled out before. Looked in my TZE parts books and saw no
sign of it.
