In California you'll have to put the carburetor back on to pass smog, but that's only every other year. Port injection vs throttle body is an interesting choice, but I'm not sure what the benefit would be at our low RPM's. The GMC EFI group on google has been mostly discussing the Howell TBI with the DynamicEFI EBL that allows great flexibility in the fuel injection and spark control tables. Of course the EBL also works with multi-point fuel injection, so that might be helpful.

Somebody mentioned a vendor offering a new electronic fuel injection, was it Holley? In any case their offering didn't control spark (I believe) and that's half the battle...

If you will swap between fuel injection and a carb, then you'll have to somehow manage fuel pump pressure. Too much will certainly flood the carb and too little will kill your fuel injected engine's performance.
