If you're going that far north before turning easy, you could try to see the Wisconsin Dells. Certainly very touristy, but kind of fun to ride the ducks and see some of the surrounding scenery.
Also, Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesen is a neat stop if you enjoy architecture.
Illinois doesn't have too much to offer along that route, though there is the Blackhawk statue on the east side of the Rock River near Oregon, and you can also drive by the nuke plant. The wind farm is kind of neat to see, but that's about it in Illinois.
