i find so much info about upgrading and etc, but when i just need to find part numbers as in rear brake pads and bearings, where is the best place to look
thanks bgk

Brian,

The dumb question is the one you are afraid to ask (for whatever reason.)

About parts.
You have a nearly complete answer here, but something was left out.
Even if you have all the parts books, that does not mean you can get a serviceable part. (Story down the page.)
If you need parts for planned maintenance and non-emergency repairs, Call the Jim-s. You will get the right part on the first try, the true cost to you will be competitive with local and quality will be there. (These are the parts they use and they don't need angry clients.)
Get the parts books and learn hoe to use the websites in case you need something faster than JimK (I have never asked JimB for this service) can get it to you. If you have to do that, be ready to have a bad time. Many parts out there are inferior quality or just plain wrong. (Look back about two month for discussions about rear wheel bearing seals.)

Story:
We had a throttle cable fail on the road near home. We managed to limp home and I went to the local NAPA warehouse to get the replacement listed in the GMCMI parts book. By the time I got home the they had closed. The cable in the box looked a lot like what the old cable might have been, but it sure was not a no-tools fit. I was done a somewhere after midnight. (Fortunately, Mary loves driving the coach - so I slept in back this run.)

When that cable failed as a result of installation issues, (again on a holiday weekend) I got another replacement as the NAPA warehouse (the only local supplier with stock). It was different, a much better fit, but still would have been tough for someone without major tools.

When you have to buy two to get one that works, it is a serious PITA.

Matt
