But you didn't pay $$$$$$ for the land your house sits on either. It is all about ratios. We spent more on consumer items than real estate then, and labor to fix an appliance was less than to toss it in the trash and replace it like it is today. The root of the whole problem is the cost of real estate, and the cost to mortgage it. 30-yr mortgages are a crappy way of the banks making money off the masses, and let's face it, in 1938, it was a good way to do things, but it has not scaled well.
