In a recent thread Richard asked about the contacts in the underhood light -- and since I had an old one that came with some spares...I took it apart.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35884&title=gmc-underhood-light-001&cat=5598

In this photo is a strpped portion of the cable which I assume was to provide a ground to the bulb holder --

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35891&title=gmc-underhood-light-008&cat=5598

I wondered if the stripped portion was originally held by the tab you see in this picture. Or was the cable clamped here and the ground meant to rub at the hole -- which is where I found it...

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35890&title=gmc-underhood-light-007&cat=5598

Anyone need any parts?

Dennis

Bill,
The ground wire issue must be very common -- I still wonder if when originally assembled the exposed ground wire would have been held by the tab inside the body or if the tab only held the cable to prevent it from being pulled out of the light bulb socket.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=35890&title=gmc-underhood-light-00&cat=5598

I will try to locate a suitable bulb holder replacement to aid others who may want to rebuild the unit.
Thanks for posting the photos...

Dennis,

That bulb holder assembly looks like the kind that are used for the backup
lights in early '70's cars. I didn't check the bulb number in the GMC
manual, but once you have the bulb number it can be crossed referenced to
other backup light bulbs from the same era. Could also be from a single
element license plate lamp.

Just a thought...

Dennis,

Come to think of it - that socket may be similar to the MGB/MGC backup and
license plate lights.

What makes you think the factory wiring diagram has any resemblance to what
is actually in your coach! lol!!!

I am still finding loose wiring ends. I love it when I go through great
pains to find both ends of a PO wire only to find out neither end is
connected to anything.

If it's factory wiring I'm continually amazed to find that the wiring
diagram is usually exactly right. As if there aren't a dozen other
reasons to own a GMC then being able to actually follow the wiring on
paper is certainly a big one.

Kelvin,

I agree with you on the manual and the FACTORY wiring. It's the add on
stereo, Cb wiring, strange wiring from the Onan compartment etc. that drives
me nuts. I was just yanking Dennis' chain (I bought my GMC from him).

I hope I am not injecting information at the wrong place........

HERE IS A NICELY BUILT LAMP, portable or secured, your choice, has a REPLACEABLE directed beam lamp, comes with a cigarette lighter plug. If you put a Cig Socket in the under hood area, you can use the light like a trouble cord inside to look at the engine and outside to look under the hoods.

http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/HLP-251/HALOGEN-LAMP-ASSEMBLY-W/AUTO-LIGHTER-CORD/1.html

THIS IS EXTREMELY WELL BUILT AND RUGGED. I have purchased a couple for trouble lighting for my cars as well as the GMC.

DIS....
I use this company as a hobbiest supplier. I have no connection to this company and I am not compensated if anyone responds to this article.
Just passing along something I found that I feel is well built and may meet the needs of some of the GMC community....

Larry,

I like that light. I guess I have to peruse that website more often.
Constantly changing items.

All Electronics is a great source for electronics parts. Another good
source is Jameco Electronics - though not usually as cheap - but still good
variety and prices
