Last weekend I accidently bought a 2006 Civic Hybrid. So i got a little caught up in what the kids are doing ot maximize mileage.
They actually drive without AC to get 3 extra MPG- (screw that)
But they also inflate the tires to the max number on the sidewall and some go op over 50 PSI.
Is the this just uncomfortable or stupidly dangerous?
thanks

Dave,
Some aspects of so-called hypermileage driving are dangerous -- tailgating trucks, etc...

If it has the original spec tires, they are already low rolling resistance and have reduced grip. Other than medium and heavy duty trucks, I would never run the tires at the maximum printed on the sidewalls.

Dan, I know that you are a VW nut. I had a diesel jetta that would always go
400+ miles on 10 gallons of diesel. I drove it like you drive a bug, foot to
the floor up to the speed limit. I drove it as a driver when I was looking
for a VW rabbit pickup with a blown engine that I could swap the diesel
into. Never found one and someone wanted a first car for his daughter and
offered me an obscene amount of money for the jetta, so I sold it to him. It
had 225,000 miles on it and still ran without burning any crankcase oil. It
was a 5 speed manual trans. Helluva lot better built car than a honda.

Mine looks like this:
http://automobiles.honda.com/images/2006/civic-hybrid/certified-used/overview-panorama.jpg
Honda's response to the Prius, which has a unique look, is to make a hybrid that looks like the rest of model line.
Of course, the hybrid relies heavily on good driving practice to achieve good MPG. But I can get a steady 40 MPG just by not driving like a teenager.
The hypermilers are missing the point, anybody can design a fuel efficient car if you want to give up comfort, freeway speeds and climate control. But that's just not the American Way (do the Aussies and the Canadians here feel the same?)
My question about tire pressure is this;
the 44 psi on the sidewall is based on MAX load of 1800 lb per wheel which I am not going to achieve.
I don't mind the ride at that pressure and i like the MPG but is it safe to run tires that hard when you only have about 800 LB on each wheel?

Dan,
trying to keep the Vibe gt rolling, waiting on a solid 40 mpg car, not hybrid.

"Accidently"???
Like, "a couple years ago I bought a GMC Motorhome"
or
"The dog ate my homework"
or
(Explaining to mom while pointing at the big dog) "He followed me home, Can I keep 'em?"
All kidding aside, When does the battery (or whatever magic thing keeps it going) need to be "serviced". Bet it costs more that replacing the timing belt.

All I know is everytime I do the math, the payback period for replacing my 215,000 mile 22mpg 1996 Caravan is the entire life of the next three cars I'm likely to own.
If you want to save money you buy a cheap car.
If you want to protect the environment you keep your current car as long as possible.
If you want to make the Toyota execs wallets a little fatter you buy a hybrid.
15000miles per year, 22 mpg = 681 gallons of gas.
60mpg = 250 gallons
$3 per gallon, 681 gallons = $2045
250 gallons = $750
so I could save $1795 in gas a year.
Subtract higher insurance.
subtract higher license tab fees.
subtract car loan interest or lost interest income and you might save $1000 a year.
So it would take 20 to 26 years to make the Prius worth while financially.

Dang, screwed up my math, it's even worse, you only save $1295 a year in gas...

When you get a car like that it becomes free to drive, the cost of fuel doesn't matter.
But in this case, i'm starting over and it comes down to cost per mile, I think the Civic will come in at bout $.17 for total cost of ownership including fuel.
Better than any car I own or have owned.
It really is getting a steady 41 MPG, the resale is good. We'll see what happens.
