Hi folks. Am I right in thinking that if you have Thorley headers, you can't get at your plastic transmission governor without taking the headers off...?

If there is a way, I'd love to hear about it.

I need a new lower speedo cable and plastic speedo drive as one killed the other. There is no problem with the governor, but I wanted to check it while I was down there and get a spare. Are they all the same or do I need to look at it before I order the spare?

Cheers all

Richard, you will need to drop that header. It is not a time consuming thing, at least on mine. Once we had it loose, I loosened the band clamp and slid it off the pipe and out of the way. Those band clamps are worth the money when the need arises to remove one.

Richard,

If the governor is unmodified, you will indeed have to remove the header
(but not iron manifold). While you've got the governor out, you may want to
remove its cover by grinding away the outer edge where the dome is crimped
to the base. With the dome loose, I'm told, on good authority, that the
governor can be R&R'd by unclipping the top bail, removing the dome, and
then the governor. To reseal the dome, run a small bead of RTV around the
joint before re-clipping the bail.

Perhaps that will save you a header R&R in the future.

My spare's got a "removable dome".

Ray,
If you are concerned about the governor -- you might oonsider buying a spare drive gear. It seems to be the part that most often fails. JimK has them in stock. I understand they are not always easy to find locally.

JimK has them for $24.
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/721

But he also wants $12 to ship it from CA to OR.

Hey Jim... can you send that USPS? Be about $2 shipping then...

I wouldn't mind having a spare gear but paying that to shipping a 1oz
part? I can't seem to pull the trigger...

Not just the drive gear goes bad, the whole governor often sticks and or gets sloppy. Only source is old TH 425s. Good luck, they are getting hard to find. There are more trannys out there than governors.

Yes, I have learned that a spare governor is a good thing to have. I am also looking for one.

Thanks folks. I need a few things from JimK anyway so I think I'll add that plastic governor gear to the list but I'll wait to remove the headers until the old gear breaks...

I believe the rebuild kits are only for a TH400 which has the governor installed under a side cover. The TH425 units are sealed although they have been cut open for repairs. There were posts and pictures about this recently.
