Those dumb vinyl things are such a pain in the posterior. crawling around int he dirt to get the strap in place.

Then two of mine are all cracked because I tried to put them on at below 30 degrees, The vinyl is now all cracked and ugly.

Does anyone make a hard plastic snap on cover?
If not they should! I'm thinking a trashcan lid would be pretty close...

Keith, I have 6 of them but only elastic hold them on, no straps. Have never had one blow off. But, I don't use them any more. They are just out in the garage. I trade out 2 tires every 2 years so never more than 6 years on a tire. My thinking is they are not worth the trouble, in my case anyway.

Ray,

Might as well start a tire war variant: I've never used tire covers on
anything, so I'm probably biased against them. But, a few years ago we had
a Toyo tire co. representative speak at an SOB rally. His position was that
they do no good; he maintained that the vast majority of the surface
deterioration of tires is due to ozone, not sunlight. Covers don't slow
down ozone.

I'm gonna replace the tires after 5 years anyway; why complicate my life
during that time by fooling with tire covers?

Keith,
California Car Cover Compay makes soft vinyl covers that have a sewn
in spring rod gizmo in them that locks the cover on the tire. All you
have to do to install them is loop it over the top of the tire, spread
it at the bottom and it's on quite snut. Fast and efficient. I have
three trailers and never park them without covering the tires. A
couple times a year they go on sale and are cheaper than wally world.
I am with you on disliking that strap arrangement. We have spring and
winter winds that sometimes exceed 60+ mph and these are the only kind
that do not come off.

The only use we in Oregon have for tire covers is an ez mask when you are
painting wheel wells & such and don't want to get overspray on wheels &
tires. What is UV and ozone anyway? That big yellow orb in the sky is so
infrequent a visitor here that exposure to it is almost mandatory in order
to keep up your vitamin D levels. Oregon residents don't tan in the
summertime, they rust. Seems that I read an article from some obscure Govt.
study of the Los Angeles basin air quality, "once upon a time" and they said
that rubber part deterioration was caused by the toxic elements in
automobile exhaust, and the only cure would be to make all the automobile
engines no larger than 1 liter with 50% of them being hybrid or electric
with a few hydrogen thrown in for good measure, Try running a 12000 # GMC
with a 61.024 cubic inch engine. Probably need about 5:66 gearing. Try to
remember that most Fairy tales start with" Once upon a time" I sometimes get

I think we have been discussing two different covers throughout this thread--spare tire and temporary covers for "road" tires

Toyo tire co. representative speak at an SOB rally. His position was that they do no good; he maintained that the vast majority of the surface deterioration of tires is due to ozone, not sunlight. Covers don't slow down ozone.
_______________________________________________________

I have never seen a difference with or without covers....

However, there are tire sprays that are inteneded to cover the tire, it makes them shiney but they are also covering the rubber pores with this layer of "protectant". I am now wondering if that is what we should be using????

Then again, if we have to get rid of them every 6 years, do we really need it?
