When I got my coach in July, Ken Henderson and I decided that it would be pretty boring to chronicle the day-to-day adventures that are new and exciting to me, but probably pretty mundane to a seasoned pro. However, a recent event has prompted me to write: Since day 1 I have smelled something that I thought was propane. Bubble tests and the fact that John Sharpe slept several nights enroute led me to believe I was smelling something else - especially when Rob Mueller discovered mouse droppings on the kitchen counter top.
Ken and Rob have now come to the conclusion that, not only do I have a live rodent, but I might just be the proud owner of a DRT (Dead Right There) mouse. Last night I went over and cleaned out all the cabinets. Mostly manuals, books, papers, etc. with no evidence of rodentia. I know from experience that some mice will eat some soap, but I have a full bar in the bathroom with no evidence of chewing....however, when you open the cabinet doors under the sink in the dry side bath there are gnaw marks around each door. In the bathroom I discovered a little poop, although Hey! you have to give the little feller credit for being close to the right place. BTY - I have found no evidence of wire chewing but did find some pvc that looks like it went through the macerator.
Question - Other that setting multiple traps of varying type or getting a hungry cat, do you have other suggestions for ridding/preventing an infestation in the future. Are there sprays (other than chlorophorm) they don't like? Looks like John plugged all the obvious holes, but I think it would probably take a very small hole for a mouse. The sticky traps work, by the way. I caught me last night. Thought I'd picked them all up before I got to work, but there it is...I just re-soled my shoe.
Febreeze inside cabinets and on carpeted surfaces under cabinets might help us forget the dearly departed...or we could just smear some Vicks Vapo-rub on our upper lip like they do in a crime scene.

The first year we had our coach, we made the mistake of using d-CON. Unfortunately it worked, and for the entire next camping season we got to smell "dead mouse". However since we never found the body we guessed that it was somewhere behind the kitchen counter (the mice had been leaving droppings in the drawers). The next year the smell was gone. Four years later when we replaced our range and counter top, we found the mouse skeleton lying behind the microwave (located where the regular oven used to be).

I also have found that dead mice can smell like propane. No idea why, but I can confirm your nose on that.
Good luck finding where they get in. Rick Denny has been looking for all the places for years now.

Stick, I understand the a couple of snakes can take care of the problem. They can get behind the oven, under the shower, about anywhere a mouse could get.

I believe one (and you need more than one) of the best ways to take care of mice in the GMC is to not let them in. One of those ways is to eliminate them before they get in. I love the little guys and want to feed them very well. Here are the feeders I made for them.

I fill the feeders with those little green "food" blocks made by TomCat. The blocks go in the stem of the tee. The end caps with the small hole in them are not necessary if your spouse is not a friend to all chipmunks. The three pieces of pipe are glued into the Tee. The end cap on the stem should not be glued so you can load the feeder. Do not load them with pellets as the little buggers will carry the pellets off faster than you can fill it. I place these around the outside of the house and barn and have found them to be very effective, not perfect but effective. I have to strap mine to a piece of rebar to prevent the raccoons from dragging them off. This has cut down mouse intrusions by 90%. Sticky traps are also good.

I also do not bait conventional traps in the barn. I have found modified traps are just as effective. I use enhanced trigger mouse traps shown here:

I place the trigger end of the trap against a wall the mouse will run next to. Mice generally prefer to run along a wall as it limits their exposure to predators. The CFO believes that oil of peppermint will repel mice. I have placed my enhanced traps next to her cotton balls of peppermint oil and caught mice.

Hi
We had mice when we bought the gmc (2005) & again in the spring 2006 & 2007. We had to gut the gmc each time. In the spring of 2007 after gutting it again, we have run an electronic device that my husband laughed at me about when I purchased & now he swears by it - haven't had a mouse in the gmc since. Knock wood.

I had posted this on soe sort of sideways version of this thread, didn't know if everyone got a look at it:
Here in the Southwest, we have a problem with Pack-rats. They are actually some sort of wood rat and, like mice, are nocturnal. I don't know if this will work with mice, but I found out that lighting the underside of the vehicle will keep them away. At most desert campgrounds, the camp hosts place light ropes under their motor homes or trailers. The rats, which do their thing at night, stay away. I tried this at home, in my driveway, and haven't had a rat problem since. Prior to using the light ropes, I would set live traps and catch a rat on a regular basis. I have had limited luck with light ropes from Lowes, they drop out sections of lights after a short time, but I'm considering ordering some LED ropes which will last longer and give off more light.
The biggest problem I have is remembering to go out and plug the light ropes in every evening. I guess I could rig them up to a timer or a photocell. Again, I don't know if this would work on mice, but light ropes are cheap enough that it's worth a try.
