The kid is looking to buy a diesel 2003 Dodge Sprinter with 245,000 miles on it to use it for transportation and a base camp for him and his mountain climbing buddies. Asking $8,000 New trans. Not smoking. He drove it and no obvious issues. Anyone have any experience with the diesels in these and is 245 K a high miler for this 5 cylinder Mercedes in it?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

From what I know, if maintained properly, 400K is not unheard of with those Benz oil burners...

...give it to a young kid to thrash and you have to derate that number considerably.

Diesels don't like to be revved. Kids drive cars hard.

my 2 cents.

HI

If it has been looked after has another 400,000 to 600,000. Has
excellent reputation and great mileage.

If he is not interested, let me know location of sale.

Gary, I know of 6+ bands that are using these for constant national touring and have nothing but raves about them. One told me of thousands in savings vs their previous gas powered van. Being able to stand up in them makes for comfortable running and makes for a great cargo area in back. Some have even gotten rid of trailers by creative packing of band and personal gear.

Congrats on finding one so low mileage. Most of the fleets aren't turning them till 500K. Then they need a 4-5,000.00 rebuild of sorts and then good for another 500K. They are not easy to find, even in this economy.

Just a tad over half of it's life (if taken care of) is gone. Just a tad
less than half is left.

That engine base has been around for quite some time. In the 1970's MB made
a bus about the size of the Sprinter. It was powered by at 5 cylinder diesel
married to a six-speed manual transmission. I drove one. It got great
mileage then. It's better now.

Here's a link to a photo of an early 90's model. Solid windshield instead of
split like in the 70's.

I have a friend who has a motor home made on a Sprinter chassis. I can report that riding in the back seat is intolerable. It is so rough that it will jar your teeth. Possibly good for a truck but not worth the $$ for a motorhome. Give me that air suspension of our GMC's anytime.
