Cracked head, rebuild the heads.
Still won't run well, no compression, massive blowby.

2009
rebuilt the engine. ( was unemployed, no cash for anything else )

2010
New stereo
New exhaust
Dropped tanks, steel fuel lines, selector, elect pump, wide band o2, tuned carb runs better
checked front wheel bearings
Now doing bearings, brakes, CV boot....Hello Dave Lenzi??

Still haven't seen the inside of a campground in it.
Don't know why she's getting impatient, any ideas??

Keith,

Get that thing put back together, put some wheels on it, and take HER on a weekend trip to some beautiful, remote campground, for a weekend trip! It has been stated here before (and MY wife would agree) the GMC is more fun than a '55 Chevy...it has a bigger back seat!

(Disclaimer; This reply was approved by my wife).

Patience. Rome wasn't built in a day. It also took more than a few pieces of
gold.

Tell her you want her to feel safe. Then tell her you'll stop looking for
problems and let her discover them.

Better yet, tell her its for the "next woman." She'll either keep quiet or
make you find out how it sleeps...one person.

Actually, if you do get somewhere you can start to make descent memories.

I'm sure the new stereo will make it steer better. Either that or something
else made mine better. I can't remember which.

When we purchased our GMC, it was supposed to be ready to go. 2 years and
$15,000.00 later we took a 200mile trip to Seattle. On the return trip the
MC went out. Have coach net, they towed it to the nearest GMC dealer in
Tacoma. All day and $450.00 later they were able to get the brake warning
light to stay out. Still had a spongy pedal and limped home. We used the
Black List and met some wonderful GMC'ers. This convinced us to join the
Cascaders as well as Western States. Met more great people and had some
great times along the way. Wouldn't have known any of those fine people if
it weren't for breaking down on I-5. My wife has been in one hospital or
another since July 6th. She still faces more open heart surgery. What
sustains her is a very strong desire to get back in that GMC and enjoy some
great times with people in the GMC community. It is not the adversity that
is the problem, it is what you do in the face of adversity that matters. The
people are the greatest, the GMC is only the means to that end. Tell her to
hang in there. Just a thought, make sure that you involve her with
modifications that are JUST FOR HER, and she will take ownership of the
situation. Better she be an ally than an adversary.

Get that sucker on the road! My wife likes nothing better than to wake up by the ocean. We'll drive out to Half Moon Bay on a Friday night just to park by the ocean so that SHE can awaken with the roar of the surf out our window.

What does SHE want to wake up next to? (other than you, or Brad Pitt?) Do the safety stuff first and GO!

Are there any rallies in your area that you could visit? Even coachless you (and HER) can see coaches in use and meet the people using them.

While your coach needs to be safe, it doesn't need to be perfect to use it. Get it usable and take a trip--even a very short one. (Even just a tail-gating event.) The best way to know what you need to do to the coach is to use the coach.

Keith,

Take it from me, you'll be criticized if you delay taking the GMC to a rally
until you finish everything. I really caught the dickens when I showed up a
the first Marion, NC convention in the SOB with the excuse that the GMC was
still gutted: "But we want to see it gutted!!! Why didn't you put cots in
it & come on?"

She wants to use the restroom. For some reason, women have to use
every one you own, or drive by on a trip. I don't understand, I just
go along with the program.

Nope - she's not gonna use the potty in the GMC until I change out the recirculating toilet. I told her I was planning on changing it before we use it. She asked why. I explained how the recirculating toilet worked. She said "smart man". After 30 some years I know what is or is not gonna fly with her. The recirc toilet is definitely one of those things that ain't gonna pass muster with her.

Well the last two things caught me by surprise. The Gas tank refirb started out as a hey, it won't draw gas from the Aux tank, I'll replace the selector valve. Which turned into, wow these gas lines are really brittle and cracking...Better replace them.

Then I noticed that the drivers side wheel was coated with grease, jack it up and there is about 1/2" of wobble in the wheel...
So at the risk of being stranded with a screwed up front end and costing even more, I'm pulling the hubs and having Dave rebuild them and converting to 80mm calipers ( the old calipers look pretty bad, torn seals etc )

But after thats done, unless I find a cracked A-Arm, we are going somewhere!

The new stereo system is probably the best improvement one can do.
Eliminates all those funny noises until something REALLY has to be fixed...

Then all you need is the Black list and a credit card...

"Took me by surprise." This is the great thing about this "club" of GMC folks. We all charge off in 30+ year old vehicles with a house attached and are "surprised" when something goes wrong. But, then we can write about it on this forum and many others who had that surprise earlier help us figure out how to fix the surprise. And sometimes it will surprise you and work fine.

Keep working on the coach but do take a short trip when you get have it safe. It really is something, the GMC. Back up to a small lake or anything with a view and that back window is fantastic in the morning. We love it and never never thought we would like a motorhome, but this one isn't square and it has big windows! Can't wait to get on the road again.

Keith,

You are laboring under several preconceived misconceptions. She needs to see the potential that the coach provides. When she understands (through experience) that you can go places and always have A-your own bathroom, B-a real refrigerator, C-your own bed, there will be a definite change in point of view. We frequently take the coach to nearby parks just for those conveniences. This will be more important now (after Labor Day) as many recreational facilities will be closed down. This is actually better for you.

A lot at this time will be determined by how much you trust the coach. Set a trip to an event that you know she will enjoy. When she experiences how comfortable the coach (my grandsons call ours a housetruck) can make the time, I bet her patience level improves.

It is late in the season so you may be out of local events. So - get out your navigating software (SA, S&T...) and let it tell you what is in your comfortable range. If it is a 250mi radius, then you are in range of some beautiful places that I have never stood on. The Minnesota shore of Superior is an amazing thing. Unfortunately, I was never there with a road vehicle available.

She doesn't need to go to a "Campground" at all. In 20k miles and 4 years we have been in a campground (except for access to special events) three (3) nights total.

Unfortunately, your are two days from DuQuoin. If you could make it there (even for a few days) and get her meeting the rest of the GMC cult and involved with others, she might find that this is an effort well worth whatever it takes. Actually, a Sunday morning watching the sun rise across Superior might do that too, but that is for you (2) to decide.

Matt
